National Championships Day 2

Day two of the National Championships, held at Holyrood Sports centre saw all the junior events take place. Drumchapel had a few titles to defend – how would they get on?

Minor Girls
Donna Gillon and Lucy Elliott won their respective group to advance to the final group as well as Fiona Scott. Both girls beat Fiona to set up an all Drumchapel final. Donna won the match 3-1 to win her first National title.
Minor Boys
Rory Boyd reached the quarter finals of the minor boy’s event.
Cadet Boys Event
Scott Barton reached the final of the cadet boys event in style, after beating club mate Rory Boyd in the quarter finals, he showed his talent against the up and coming Christopher Wheeler. Adam Gaffney was causing his own upsets in the cadets. He scored a very good win against the Scottish Under 14 Schools Champion Ying Jin in the quarter finals and in the semi finals Adam played really well to beat Alex Wheeler.
So this set up the 2nd all Drumchapel final – Scott Barton v Adam Gaffney. Adam started the match very well, but Scott showed his class to recover and win the national title for the 2nd time. There were some tremendous rallies and both players can be pleased with their efforts.
Cadet girls
Donna Gillon won her group in the cadet girls, which set her up for a semi final clash with Nadine Wright,  Nadine went 2-0 up, but Donnas showed she is one to watch for the future and played some great attacking shots to win the third set, Nadine recovered to win the fourth set.
Junior Girls
Natasha Milliken won group 1 without too much trouble, in her semi final match she defeated Rhian Williams 3-1. Natasha played some good positive table tennis to reach the final. In the final she faced Linda Flaws. Natasha got off to a great start winning the first two sets and was leading in the third set, Linda battled hard to won games three and four. In the final set, Natasha got off to a great start leading 7-3, only for Linda to claw her way back into the match and with the score at 10-8, Natasha last attacking shot clipped the edge of the table for win the national title for the 2nd time.
Junior Boys
 
Scott Barton, Calum Main, Nathan Courtney and Basel Razouk all won their groups. Nathan went on to win his quarter final match against Blair Fowler, who Nathan had lost to at the West of Scotland Open. Nathan Played some tremendous rallies to win 3-1. Basel lost out to Sean Doherty. Scott and Calum won their respective matches with ease.
The semi finals of the event saw Calum Main v Nathan Courtney. Nathan and Calum were involved in some high class table tennis and as the match went on the crowd gathered. Nathan won the first set, sets two and three went to Calum, set four to Nathan. This set up a enthralling final set. Calum got off to the better start and raced to a 7-2 lead, Nathan continued to battle away and clawed it back to 7-7. Calum however kept his composure winning the final set 11-7.
The other semi final was Scott Barton v Sean Doherty. Scott started off well, but Sean managed to keep the youngster to win the first set, Scott however responded by winning the second set, Sean then went on to win sets three and four.
The final of the junior boys saw Sean Doherty v Calum Main. Sean started off strong winning the first two sets. However this was to be Calum’s day and he rose to the occasion and played some amazing table tennis to claw his way back into the match winning the third and 4th set.
In the final set, both players were looking toi gain the advantage, but it was Calum who battled away with consistent topspins both wings to claim his first national title at this age group.
Junior Boys Doubles
Nathan Courtney and Basel Razouk reached the semi finalist, losing out to Scott Barton and Calum Main. The final was between Scott Barton/Calum Main v Sean Doherty/Ian Johnston. This was a tremendous match for the spectators. Scott and Calum really had to battle hard and were 2-1 down in sets, but won a very tight fourth set. In the final set, Sean and Ian had a 8-2 lead, but the drumchapel boys were not be denied and staged a remarkable comeback to win the title winning 11-9.
Junior Girls Doubles
Natasha Milliken and Lynda Flaws won the title without any trouble beating all other teams that they faced. Well done girls.
Overall a very successful national championships, Drumchapel TTC played walked away with a very 9 national titles. But even the players who didn’t win titles all showed how much they have improved this season and roll on next season. Congratulations to all the players.
